THE SOIL AFTER RAIN

SCENT OF BACTERIA ACTINOMYCETE
scent origin

Soil’s “rain smell” is a signal of survival and spread

Actinomycete bacteria, especially Streptomyces, create the fresh after-rain scent by releasing geosmin and 2-MIB when forming spores. These aromas attract springtails (tiny soil bugs), which feed on the bacteria and help disperse their spores.
